The C.I.S.L. is situated in Lyon's 8th arrondissement, in the Etats-Unis area.This was a vast rural area until the late 19th century. But with the industrial revolution came the need for new land. Large-scale industry sprang up to the south-east of the city and housing developed accordingly. - 1925 to 1935 : The architect Tony Garnier was chosen to build blocks of flats on the Boulevard des Etats-Unis. - 1959 : The 8th arrondissement resulted from a division of the 7th arrondissement.
- 1962 : The largest youth centre (or M.J.C.) in Europe and the Lyon Youth Hostel (or F.L.A.P.), the former name of the C.I.S.L. association, was officially opened by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, Maurice HERZOG and the Mayor of Lyon, Louis PRADEL.
- 1978 to 1979 : Renovation work on the F.L.A.P.
- 1980 : The Centre International de Séjour de Lyon Association (39 bedrooms - 7 rooms - a canteen with 100 covers) was officially opened by the mayor of Lyon, Francisque COLLOMB.
The association joined U.C.R.I.F. étapes Jeunes, a group of centres specialising in youth accommodation in France. - 1989 : 1st renovation project (never completed)
- 1996 : The City of Lyon wanted to have its own centre (in compliance with applicable standards) to accommodate large groups of young people visiting the area. A project was voted and involved major renovation and building extension work.
- 1997 to 1998 : Building work was carried out.
- 1998 : The new Centre International de Séjour de Lyon Association building (100 bedrooms - 10 rooms - Restaurant with 140 covers) was officially opened by the Mayor of Lyon, Raymond BARRE.
The centre opened its doors to groups for the Football World Cup. - 2006 : The U.C.R.I.F. étapes Jeune network became Ethic Etapes.
- 2007 : The organisation changed names again to become : Ethic Etapes – CISL - Lyon
